End of paper receipts in France

The French anti-waste law (Law No. 2020-105 of 10 February 2020 or “Loi anti-gaspillage”), aimed at controlling waste and promoting a circular economy, has been in effect since August 1st, 2023. This regulation aims to increase consumer awareness while reducing waste in various areas. Its objectives also include the elimination of harmful substances from receipts and the reduction of the substantial paper waste generated by approximately 30 billion receipts annually. Merchants now only have to provide printed receipts when asked explicitly by the customer.

The law's enforcement date was originally set for January 1, 2023, but postponed in order to give POS vendors more time to incorporate digital receipt functionalities into their software.

The paper receipt will be replaced by e-ticket solutions that are sent to the buyer

• by QR code (allows the e-ticket to be retrieved from a web page)
• by message in the buyer's banking application (using the bank card sends the e-ticket automatically to the application)
• by SMS
• by e-mail

These changes primarily concern

• cash register receipts produced in sales areas and in establishments open to the public
• tickets issued by vending machines
• bank card tickets
• vouchers and promotional or discount tickets.
